TODAYMoms - Are playgrounds too safe?

TODAYMoms - Are playgrounds too safe?

I have seen this pop up else where. I think they are too safe. I see them as boring boring boring. Recently I took my son to a park in Jackson and dammit if they didn't have stuff from my childhood! They had one small "safe" playground thingy and "safe" swing set (the kind where your child's legs go through the holes so they don't fall out) and one large climb/step and slide combo that was also designed safe and fall proof. The rest was the small metal animal rides on a very flimsy metal coil, a old style all-metal swing set with normal seats, a old fashion all-metal monkey bars climbing thing and by golly, I even saw a balance beam! To top this off, they had an all steel metal spin around wheel..Let me think.. what were they called.....I don't know but here's a photo of one.

I think the park in Hampton has one too. I grew up in a neighborhood called Bonanza in Jonesboro, GA for the younger years of my life till I was 13 or 14 I think. Maybe a bit younger. When I think of my childhood I think of this place.
My childhood home

The pine tree in front to your left was planted by me in 1979 or 1980. I was 8 or 9 years old I think and I can actually remember being with my Dad and we stopped on the side of the road and dug up a few pine tree saplings. We planted 3 more on the other side in a row and that was basically my sisters and brothers trees, but the front was mine.  It makes the house look so small now. I have driven by here and there and I swear the siding has not been repainted since we did it in 1983 or so. Probably before that. I used to climb out of the upstairs bathroom window out on the carport roof and then on the house roof and sit there. Lots of memories of that house but I will save that for another time.

Back to the parks. I still want to get on the old stuff and try to climb on the monkey bars or take a spin on the merry go round thing and puke my guts out.  This new stuff looks so boring! No challenge.

When I took my son to the one in Jackson he spent more time on the old stuff than any of the new stuff. I think that says something.
